The LBJ Coloring Book

In honor of today being Election Day in the United States, I thought I would share a very strange piece of political ephemera from 1964. This is the LBJ Coloring Book. The coloring book was published  in 1964 by Gem Publishing and was written by Norman Miller and Illustrated by Cal Massey.

In 1964, Lyndon Baines Johnson was running for President of the United States. He had been President  for less than a year by the time this book came out (after the assassination of John Kennedy), and had enough skeletons out of the closet that Norman Miller and the (presumed) Republicans created this coloring book so you could see and color them all. It's full of dated references and drunk driving and told from the prospective of Her, one of the Johnson's dogs. See all 22 pages and the key after the jump.

Motel Monday: Why the Long Face?

Today's Motel Monday theme is devoted to man's best friend.ummm....horse? The majesty of these creatures helped add an aura of Wild Westyness to motels and tourists in dire need of gunfights or fields for running and grazing. These are a dozen  postcards featuring either live horses or signs featuring horses. See all 12 after the jump.

The awesome sign is gone, as to be expected. The dirt has been paved and they have a shady Coke machine in the corner. There's a Youtube video that shows the Cactus in it current (2009) state and it's not pretty.

Algemac's Restaurant Postcard Menu - Glendale, California

An oddly-shaped postcard menu from Algemac's Restaurant in Glendale, California. Not sure of the date but it is probably from the 1950s or early 1960s. Here's what the outside looked like and article about Algemac's in 2008, and here's what happened to it.

1964 Tournament of Roses Parade - Pasadena, California

The Parade theme for 1964 was SYMBOLS OF FREEDOM. I did not color correct or do do anything tothese photos other than crop a little of the corners. I tried to properly note the float or the sponsor of the float but it can be hard to tell.
